The literature on analytical methods and on the investigation of compounds shows that there are hardly any fields in which paper chromatography has not found some use. it is very much used as a research tool. It is also being used increasingly for routine analyses particularly for new separations where no classical method exists. Some of the principal uses of paper chromatography are summarized bellow
CLINICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL 1. Separation of amino acids and peptides is regularly carried out to help in the investigation of protein structures. 2. Routine examination of urine other body fluids for amino acids and sugars (this is most important. as it can be used for diagnosis of a number of pathological conditions with the standard map technique). 3. Separation of purine bases and nucleotides in the examination of nucleic acids. 4. Separation of steroids.
GENERAL APPLICATIONS 1. Analysis of polymers. 2. Detection and estimation of metals in soils and geological specimens (minerals,oils) 3. Investigation of phenolie materials in plant extracts. 4. Separation of alkaloids and 5. Separation of radioisotopically labelled compounds.
