Chromophore

Chromophore:

Any functional group, which shows absorption of a characteristic nature in the ultraviolet or visible region, is called a Chromophore. If a series of compounds have the same functional group (homologous series) and no complicating factor’s are present. all the compounds  will generally absorb nearly at the same wavelength and have almost the same molar absorptivity. Thus the functional group present in a compound can easily be determined by co-relating the spectrum of the compound with spectral data of known compounds.
