Define adsorption, development, chromatogram & resolution

The physical attachment of the substances with other material is called adsorption.

In a separation of mixtures by paper chromatography or thin layer chromatography, the production of coloured derivatives of the solutes by spraying the stationary phase with selective reagents in order to establish the location of individual substances is called development.

The finished paper or thin layer plate having bands of colour is called chromatogram.

The degree of separation of compounds of similar characteristics is called resolution.
