Occurrence & Ores of Aluminum



Occurrence

Aluminum is the most abundant metal. It is the third most abundant element after oxygen and silicon. It forms about 7.3% of the earth’s crust.

Ores of Aluminum

1. Silicate Ores

i)              Feldspar:       (K2O. Al203..6 SiO2)

ii)            Kaolin:      Al2O3. 2SiO2. 2H20

iii)          Potash mica:  C2O. 3Al2O3. 6 SiO2. 2H2O

Oxide Ores

i)         Bauxite:       Al2O3. 2H2O

ii)       Corundum: Al2O3

iii)                  Ruby  Al2O3. 3H2O

Ruby (red), Sopphire (blue) and Emerald (green) are impure forms of aluminium Oxide. (Al2O3).

3. Fluoride Ore

i)                                     Cryolite: Na3 AIF6 or3NaF. AlF3

4. Sulphate Ore

i)                                                Alunite or Alum Stone:                       K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.4 Al(OH)3
