Qualitative and Quantitative study of Spectroscopy

Qualitative and Quantitative study of Spectroscopy

Spectroscopy has many uses in chemistry. Among these are qualitative and quantitative analyses of compounds. Hundreds of analytical procedures are based on the formation of coloured solutions. The colour itself  which arises from selective absorption in the visible region serves as a means of qualitative identification. For example, the data of absorbance of KMn04 solution is shown

The quantitative estimation of KMn04 solution can also be done by spectrometry. For this purpose KMn04 solutions of known concentrations are plotted against absorbance and a plot is obtained. The absorbance of unknown concentration is also determined spectroscopically and its concentration is taken from the plot of known concentrations.
