The movement of any substance relative to the solvent front in a given chromatographic system is constant characteristic of that substance. In paper chromatography Rf value is constant,

Rf =  Distance of spot of component from the original line


           Distance of solvent front from the original line

In some cases the solvent front runs off the end of the paper and it is more convenient to express the movement of any substance by comparing it with the movement of another substance.

Rx =  Distance covered by the component


       Distance covered by the standard solvent

The Rx value is useful tool because it is constant when all conditions are exactly reported. Therefore, We can say that Rx values can be used for the identification of substances in most cases.
