What is a picaresque novel and who were its main authors?



 

The picaresque novel tells an episodic story of a vagrant rogue’s (= a thief, a dishonest person) progress towards his own improvement into an honest person accepted in society (from bad to good); the reward does not come on earth, however.

It is a popular sub-genre of prose fiction which is usually satirical, realistic and humorous. It depicts the adventures of a roguish hero of low social class who lives by his/her wits in a corrupt society.
